PR Swatting

Here is a very interesting article about PR pitching.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/24/your-money/swatting-at-a-swarm-of-public-relations-spam.html?_r=0
The journalist writes about unsolicited and untargeted PR pitches.   The world of public relations is very interesting and in my opinion the best way to reach people is to send relevant pitches with newsworthy information.
There are ways to connect that are advantageous to both the journalist and the publicist.
Here are a few of my suggestions:
1.    Make sure you know your audience.  Do your research.
2.    Call the journalist before you email them.
3.    Email them information on their beat.
4.    Take the time to form a relationship.
5.    Take no for an answer until you have more information.
Have a wonderful holiday!

“Two Publishing Stars Fade Away”

November 19th, 2013 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

This past weekend we lost two greats in the publishing world.
Doris Lessing passed away at 94 years old.  She was the Nobel Prize winning author of The Golden Notebook, Memoirs of a Survivor, and The Summer Before the Dark.   In addition, Barbara Park, the author of the “June B. Jones” books passed away from ovarian cancer.   She was 66.
Please have their families in your thoughts.

Andy Kaufman: Dead or Alive?

November 14th, 2013 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

This is one of the most fascinating stories I have read in a while.  I hope an investigator or documentary filmmaker researches it and finds the truth!

Last night at the Andy Kaufman Awards a woman claiming to be the Taxi star’s daughter came up on stage and said her father is very much alive.   Kaufman death hoax rumors are not new.   In fact, his brother Michael claims he received a letter from Andy in the 90s announcing he was alive.

Very interesting … .  Here is a link to a USA Today story about the rumor.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2013/11/14/andy-kaufman-daugther-says-hes-not-dead/3525403/

Kaufman is alleged to have died of lung cancer in 1984.

Have a great weekend!

“Amazing Night!”

November 12th, 2013 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

My husband and I attended an amazing concert last Saturday Night.   We attended a Jake Shimabukuro concert.  Jake is an amazing musician.  He is a ukulele player.  He is originally from Hawaii and started playing this unique instrument at four years old.
His mom taught him a few chords and he was hooked.  However, Jake is a different ukulele player.  He makes the instrument sing and act like an electric guitar, banjo or even a harp.  He does more with four strings than many musicians who play guitars.
He was witty, smart and funny.  He is a true role model! I recommend checking him out.  He is on tour until summer.

“Josh Gad and Halloween Costumes”

November 7th, 2013 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

On November 6, USA Today published a wonderful article by contributor Josh Gad.   Gad’s article was a commentary on Halloween costumes and the current state of conformity.  Gad did not dress his 2-year old daughter as a princess, a Disney character, or heaven forbid, Miley Cyrus.   He and she went as …. Marty McFly and Doc Brown from Back to the Future!
The pictures are adorable.  However, Gad was stunned when no one recognized them!  Some thought she was Bruce Banner, others said she was a doctor!  He exclaimed, “I wanted to grab the mother by her Prada leg warmers and say:  ‘My daughter is not dressed as your damned pediatrician.  She’s Doc Brown.  The same Doctor Emmett Brown who sent McFly back to 1955 on October 26, 1985!’
Gad continues his commentary by summing up the current state of Halloween and how it relates to society.  “Uniformity has become the cool thing.  We all have the same phones.  We all dress the same way… . “  “I think the path is clear!” In order to reclaim our uniqueness, we must first reclaim Halloween
I loved it!
Conformity always made me angry.  In my opinion, social media represents the ultimate in conformity. People used to say me, “Why aren’t you on Facebook or Twitter?”  I have since conformed because of my business but rarely use is consistently.   I know the reason I do not use it… I prefer to swim away from the crowd and be myself.
People can always write me a letter or better yet, pick up the phone!

World Cancer Day

November 5th, 2013 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Happy Tuesday!   Happy Election Day!
Weatherman are predicting snow up here in Minnesota.   We are not looking forward to the cold and snow because last night we found a mouse in our basement.  It is one of many over the last few years! Yuck!  They are coming in to get away from the cold.
On to much more important topics-this February 4th is World Cancer Day.  There are events taking place around the world.  This is an important day and if you want to read one woman’s journey through her daughter’s cancer struggle, pick up Jen O’Hara’s Determined to Matter.
The memoir is a compilation of blog entries.  O’Hara’s daughter, Shannon was diagnosed with a brain tumor in April 2011.  9 months later she passed away.  The book gives life lessons and details Jen and her husband’s journey through the cancer battle.
