New Albums

October 30th, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Or CDs…. or Downloads.

Or is it Streaming…?

I don’t know but I do know I love music.  Today some great music was released.  A few months ago the music industry decided to start releasing music on Fridays instead of Tuesdays.

Sounds great to me.

So today be sure to listen to these new albums:

“If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra”

“We Love Disney” – Various Artists

“Get Up” – Bryan Adams

This album was one long rock tribute.  It is clever, fun and always good.

Also, listen to Adele’s “Hello” again.

Happy Halloween and November!

Halloween Preview

I will be at a fun event on Saturday morning.  If you live in the Minneapolis area, I will be at the Edina Pottery Barn Kids doing a storytime for Monster Needs a Costume by Paul Czajak at 11 AM.  We will have treats and a craft.  Bring you kids and dress up.  I’ll be in mouse in the storytime area.

Many people love Halloween.  One of the greatest things about this time of year are the movies, books and TV surrounding fall and Halloween.

Here is a list of some of some of my favorites:

TV: “Sleepy Hollow”  There is nothing like the 1940s animated version narrated by Bing Crosby. I was transfixed when I saw it last night after many years.

Movies: “Watcher in the Woods”  This is a creepy movie no matter your age.  It has Bette Davis, a English mansion and a mystery in the woods.  Enough said.

Music: Go to Spotify and listen to stories read by Boris Karloff.  Genius.

Books: I love anything by VC Andrews or Christopher Pike.  I grew up reading their horror and fantasy books.

Happy Halloween!

Great PR tips

October 23rd, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Happy Friday all!

Today I read some great articles about PR.  The first is about getting the media’s attention and the next is about blog tours and blog hops.

Very relevant.

What strikes me most about the media article is the great advice that I often see not taken.  For example, one should say yes to a reporter if they wish to interview you that day.

It’s short notice but do it no matter what.

Also, treat journalists with respect.  They are doing you a favor and that favor can be taken away very quickly.

If authors want to succeed, it takes work.  Again, success is hard work and there is no way around it.

Amazon and reviewers

October 22nd, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Good Afternoon and Happy Thursday!

This week it was announced that Amazon would be suing more then 1,000 sellers of fake product reviews.

They targeted account holders on Fiverr.com where jobs are sold for $5 and up.

For new authors, getting any positive review is a wonderful accomplishment.  Knowing it may be fake is horrible.

When looking for reviews, make sure the person who will review is not taking money for a 5 star review.  One wants an unbiased review.

The lines can be fuzzy as many web sites do take payment so a person can get a faster review, but always make sure the review is unbiased.

Never a dull moment in the world with Amazon around.

Creative PR Techniques

Happy Friday!

In this day and age of technology and people having very short attention spans, authors needs to try many different techniques to get readers interested.  I’ve included a few that I have used.

1. Write short and edgy articles.  Develop relationships with a few bloggers or better yet a publication like Huffington Post.  Blog for them.  Do cross-promotion.  That means you discuss each others products on your blogs, web sites, etc. Recently an author I work with published this on Huff Post.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-czajak/the-good-bad-celebrity_b_8253116.html

It is getting him some traction in the publishing world.

2. Give books away. Do a GoodReads giveaway.  I can’t stress enough that in order to get, authors have to give.  It may be a GoodReads campaign or an unpaid speaking engagement. If this occurs, the changes of getting back are greater.

3. Use social media.  Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pintrest… whatever your social media choice is, make sure you update it with regularity.  For Twitter, we had an author do Twitter chats with classrooms about one topic.  We are trying to trend on Twitter.

Those are my top three!

Keep trying and if you affect one reader’s life for the better, it is worth it!

Good Afternoon!

Hi all!

I’m back from a long weekend of moving.  It was hectic and stressful so I’m looking forward to some normalcy this weekend.

So I’m recommending some relaxing tips for this weekend.

1. See a great movie. I recommend Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks.  It is supposed to be his best since Saving Private Ryan.

2. Have a wonderful meal.  Italian for me!

3. Read a great book.  Anything by JR Ward or something fun like a romance or Agatha Christie.

4. Lastly, check out this stress release video by Mehdi Toozhy.  It relaxed me for 5 minutes.  Enjoy!

Blogging

October 6th, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Good morning!

I am not blogging this week but will be back at it on Monday, October 12.

Happy Fall!

There are so many great movies coming out this fall!

One I am looking forward to seeing is The Martian.  There are many lessons authors can learn from the movies and how a movie comes to the silver screen.

1. Self-publishing can lead one to the movies.  Author Andy Weir self-published The Martian and posted it on Amazon for .99 cents.  To gained a following and by word of mouth it was sold to Hollywood.

2. Peanutize-The Peanuts movie is coming out in November and I was not interested.  I do now know why Hollywood has to keep remaking movies.  However, last week the studio came out with an app to Peanutize yourself.  This was a genius marketing tool.  I did it.  Everyone in my office did it.

What can we learn.  Try something different and brand it.  You never know who will be watching.

3. Bond-The next James Bond movie hits the market in November.  They constantly have news stories about their stunts, who would make a good Bond and any controversy is good for the movie.

At the end of the day, remember that as an author you have a product to sell.  You need to educated the audience about that product and think of creative tactics to get anyone interested.

Have a great weekend.

You are probably thinking “What could I possibly have in common with Mrs. Ryan Reynolds?”

Well, about a year ago Blake launch a lifestyle web site called, Preserve.  It was similar to Goop.

I saw her promoting it on shows like The Chew.  I even check it out online.  However, I never went back.

I guess not many people did because this week she is shutting the web site and brand.

She admitted she failed at its mission.

“We have an incredible team of people who do beautiful work, but we launched the site before it was ready, and it never caught up to its original mission: it’s not making a difference in people’s lives, whether superficially or in a meaningful way,” said Lively.

She admitted the site was using her celebrity was a crutch because it was up and running and they had not built a brand yet.

So what can authors learn?  A few things.

1. Branding.  Find out who you are and how your book fits in with that.  What type of author do you want to be?  Horror, YA, Non-Fiction.

2. Make sure your web site address is not your book.  Make it your name.  You may write more than one book.

3.  Publish your book when you are ready.  Don’t publish and then play catch up.  The publishing industry has many rules for reviews.  If you publish before you have any identity it’s tough to gain popularity.

4. Be bold but strategically so.  Think big but also with common sense.  Have a plan.

5. Don’t use the most obvious marketing tactics.  Blake sold herself on the site but buyers wanted more.  Don’t just do book signings and call it good.  How about other venues.  Antique shops, hotels, airports.

Happy Fall!
