California

December 3rd, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

We are all mourning for the shooting that took place yesterday in California.

Amid the media coverage yesterday, I just kept asking myself why is this happening here?  Is it gun laws?  Something about our culture?  Something about our mental health?

I do know one thing:  kindness and love is the best way to help others.

It has been the most noticeable change in our lives since we moved to Michigan.  I’ve always been a person who talked to others openly but the last few years in Minneapolis, there was a change in the city.  In the state know for it’s “Minnesota Nice,” I found the people were often aloof and sometimes very rude.  So rude that my husband and I have been shocked at the kindness and local support from this town called Grand Rapids.

Here are the differences:

1. Strangers talk to you without being prompted.

2.  People are truly interested in you as a person.

3. Service is easy and people seem happy.

4. No one seems angry.

Of course there are exceptions, but I think the reason is this is a smaller town but they are very focused on improving the community!  If more areas can be like Grand Rapids, I think we would all get a long more.

Everyone wants to feel appreciated and in my opinion, if this occurs, no one would even think about a mass shooting.

So in the end, we need to stop focusing on the outside.  It’s not about beauty, what kind of clothes you wear, perfect makeup and hair and if you are famous or not.  It is about showing love and kindness.

One Man’s Refugee Story

November 20th, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

We are hearing stories every day about the Syrian refugees.  Americans are afraid to let them in the country because of terrorism. However, where are the stories about refugees contributing and finding success?

I work with a Toronto man who was an Iranian refugee in the 1980s.  He went to school, graduated from Oxford and is now an engineer.
How did a Toronto man Mehdi Toozhy survive as a Iranian refugee?
How does a little boy find his way to safety in a refugee camp?
Where does one get the drive to keep pushing themselves forward?
As a little boy, Mehdi Toozhy had to answer these questions.
Today, Mehdi is a successful engineer however 30 years ago, he was a frightened little boy in a refugee camp.
Mehdi was born to loving parents in Iran but he saw war and terrorism around him.  He knew he needed to find a way out.  He knew education was his only way out.  He worked hard and at 13, approached his parents to ask if he could leave.
They were scared but knew Mehdi was right.
At the age of 13, Mehdi’s parents put him on a train and he left home on a journey into nowhere.
Mehdi landed in Germany and worked to make money and finally went to school in Denmark.  He struggled day and night, working and studying.  He wanted to be an engineer.  Some said it would work but others would put him down.
Mehdi kept on working and trying.  He knew we would succeed.
In the end, he was right.  Mehdi Toozhy graduated from Oxford with an engineering degree.   This is the story of the American spirit.  It resides in all of us. Whether we are born in Iran or Indiana, the American Spirit can help overcome any fear or doubt.
Currently he is talking about his story and helping others in his book, Keys to Success at School and Beyond.

Social Media Tips

November 19th, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Hi all!

I’m back from my move!

I wanted to pass along some tips for social media.

Having social media is vital to any public relations need.  It is also vital to have the one communicating be experienced in social media as well as PR.

1. Host a monthly event.  Do a Friday Fun Day online to get to know your followers.

2. Get to know your followers online and then face to face.

3.  Set up a Skype account and get to know all the different aspects of Skype: Skype in the Classroom, TED, etc.

4. Make sure to get familiar with one social media service and then expand.  Don’t feel the need to use every platform and be spread thin.

5. Lastly, keep all of your social media addresses in your email signature.

Have a good night!

Good afternoon all!

There is big news in the world of Lien Public Relations.  After being located in Minneapolis, MN for 5 year, we are moving to Michigan.  As of November 18, I will be operating my business in Grand Rapids, MI.  It is a very vibrant and creative city in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan or LP!

I’m looking forward to soaking in the local restaurants, culture, and beautiful weather.

Happy Friday!

I’ve spent some time on a blog writing about stories that need more attention.  Sure, we all love to read about Kim Kardashian’s exploits and who Blake Shelton is dating, but many times real hard news stories get lost in the shuffle.  Here I will mention three stories I feel need more attention.

1. Greek authorities say five more migrants were found dead in the eastern Aegean Sea.  The story is big news in the world but we seem to bury it after who is dating the latest hot celebrity.

2. The death toll rises to 26 after Pakistan factory collapses. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/06/world/asia/death-toll-in-pakistan-factory-collapse-rises-to-20.html?_r=0

3. Russia to suspend flights to Egypt after crash. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/nov/06/putin-suspends-russian-flights-to-egypt-after-sinai-plane-crash

4. Will Smith said he will tour again with DJ Jazzy Jeff.  (OK, I had to get one in!) http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/music/2015/11/05/smith-says-hes-planning-first-real-tour-dj-jazzy-jeff/75232012/

Have a great weekend!

Amazon’s Big Gamble

November 5th, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

News Tidbit:

Amazon announced this week that they are opening a brick and mortar store in Seattle.

Very interested considering many bookstores are closing because of Amazon.

The store will include customer ratings of books alongside the book.  The store will also encourage customers to buy later on Amazon.

New Albums

October 30th, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

Or CDs…. or Downloads.

Or is it Streaming…?

I don’t know but I do know I love music.  Today some great music was released.  A few months ago the music industry decided to start releasing music on Fridays instead of Tuesdays.

Sounds great to me.

So today be sure to listen to these new albums:

“If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra”

“We Love Disney” – Various Artists

“Get Up” – Bryan Adams

This album was one long rock tribute.  It is clever, fun and always good.

Also, listen to Adele’s “Hello” again.

Happy Halloween and November!

Halloween Preview

October 29th, 2015 | Posted by Sara in Uncategorized - (0 Comments)

I will be at a fun event on Saturday morning.  If you live in the Minneapolis area, I will be at the Edina Pottery Barn Kids doing a storytime for Monster Needs a Costume by Paul Czajak at 11 AM.  We will have treats and a craft.  Bring you kids and dress up.  I’ll be in mouse in the storytime area.

Many people love Halloween.  One of the greatest things about this time of year are the movies, books and TV surrounding fall and Halloween.

Here is a list of some of some of my favorites:

TV: “Sleepy Hollow”  There is nothing like the 1940s animated version narrated by Bing Crosby. I was transfixed when I saw it last night after many years.

Movies: “Watcher in the Woods”  This is a creepy movie no matter your age.  It has Bette Davis, a English mansion and a mystery in the woods.  Enough said.

Music: Go to Spotify and listen to stories read by Boris Karloff.  Genius.

Books: I love anything by VC Andrews or Christopher Pike.  I grew up reading their horror and fantasy books.

Happy Halloween!
